Pretty much everyone adored The LEGO Movie when it hit theaters early last year, and so it was admittedly a little disappointing when Warner Bros. revealed that directorial duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller had opted to pass on directing the follow-up. Still, the pair signed on to write The LEGO Movie 2, and as a Thanksgiving gift to fans, Miller recently revealed that they’ve completed the first draft of the pic.
As per Miller’s verified Twitter account:
Just turned in the official first draft of LEGO Movie 2. Hello, Thanksgiving.

Rob Schrab, a veteran television helmer with episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation and The Mindy Project under his belt, has been set to direct the follow-up from a script by Miller and Lord. The pair, widely seen as the creative masterminds behind the franchise, will also remain involved in WB’s budding LEGO-verse by serving as producers on The LEGO Batman Movie and Ninjago, both of which are moving steadily toward theaters.
Details have been few and far between on what the plot of The LEGO Movie 2 will entail, but fans are curious to find out, especially because the end of its predecessor seemed to blow up the basic conceit that allowed its narrative to work. Miller teased an increased meta bent for this follow-up a few months ago:
“Well I don’t want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view?
“And it’s nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence.”
That aside, no plot points have come to light, despite rumors that none other than The Doctor from the BBC’s Doctor Who could pop up for the sequel, matching wits with Emmet (Chris Pratt), Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and a host of other LEGO characters.
The LEGO Movie 2 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 18, 2018.
